cranberry and apple chutney

2.5 lbs peeled chopped apples
2 onions chopped
1 teaspoon pickling spice
8 oz dried cranberries
½ pint malt vinegar
½ tsp salt
Pinch of black pepper
2 teaspoons ground ginger
8 oz sugar
Tie the pickling spices in a bit of muslin. Put the apple, onions, cranberries, spice bag, ginger and half the vinegar in a pan, and simmer until the mixture is quite soft. Add the remaining vinegar and sugar . When the sugar has dissolved, boil until the chutney is the consistency of... Chutney. Remove the spice bag and jar.
